Avonworth Community Recycling Resources

The Avonworth community is comprised of multiple municipalities – Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Emsworth, Kilbuck Township, and Ohio Township. The goal of this page is to simplify the recycling process for residents of these municipalities in order to promote a more environmentally friendly community.

Many single-use items are marked “recyclable” but not all providers of these municipalities accept all these items. Finding what items each provider accepts is not easy.

Single-use plastics are quickly becoming an environmental problem and the reality is many items marked recyclable are not accepted in curbside bins provided by garbage collectors. When non-recyclable items are placed in a recycling bin, it often contaminates the other materials in the bin.

Glass Recycling

The Avonworth community’s recycling is done through Waste Management. Although Waste Management does accept glass, they do not actually recycle it, and it is instead transferred to a landfill. However, glass is still a valuable recyclable material.

Here are a few locations and dates to recycle your glass:

  • Sewickley Riverfront Park (Open daily, dawn to dusk), 300 Chadwick St, Sewickley, PA 15143
  • Construction Junction (Monday – Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM & Sunday 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM), 214 North Lexington St, Pittsburgh, PA 15208
  • Franklin Park Municipal Building (Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), 2344 West Ingomar Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237
  • Ross Township (all days during daylight hours), 225 Cemetery Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15237
  • Avalon Borough, 629 New Brighton Road, 15202

PLEASE NOTE: cut glass, glass bakeware, mirrors, porcelain and ceramics, stemware, window glass, light bulbs, and televisions are not accepted.

“Hard to recycle” Item events

Computer monitors, hazardous waste, televisions, etc. can be recycled at special events. These items are some of the most harmful if not recycled, which is why it is important to dispose of them properly.

Registration is required for most events, and do know items at these events are collected with a fee. To check for more accepted materials or register, please visit: https://prc.org/htrregistration/

Textile Recycling

Textiles such as clothing, blankets, hats, gloves, etc. can be extremely harmful to the environment when separated to a landfill. Because of this, it is important to dispose of them properly.

For more information on accepted textiles and drop-off locations, please visit: https://www.sustainable.pitt.edu/textile-recycling/

Composting Service

Zero Waste Wrangler is a composting service available to take food scraps and compostables. They take items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, breads, and more.

They have both drop-off and curbside pick-up services for a fee. NOTE: the services are only available to the Ben Avon and Ben Avon Heights communities.
